Napa Valley: | |
Not too far North of San Francisco is California's Wine Country. It includes the semi-famous counties
of Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino. Last fall, we went to that area and stayed ay a timeshare in Windsor, CA. for
a week. Windsor is a small, quite town that's been doing a lot of refurbishing to their downtown area.
It was also a good central location for all the sightseeing we would be doing. |
Overnight Trip to Los Altos:
Not too far South of San Francisco is Los Altos, close to San Jose. That's where my brother Bill and his wife Joanne are.
They invited us down there to take us to a Peter Frampton concert. I always liked Peter Frampton, but I also
remember when he used to have long hair. Now he's old like me and his lack of long locks is more than obvious. The Paul Masson winery, where the concerts are held, is not too far from Los Altos, up in the mountains.
A beautiful spot for a concert. And as for Peter, he still rocks. It was a great concert. He has a lot of energy,
is very engaging with the audience, and surrounds himself with excellent musicians. Thanks again Bill & Joanne! |
Healdsburg: | |
Not too far North of Windsor is Healdsburg. This is a nice, older town that looks like it's
booming right along. Looks like they keep up the town very well despite it's age. |
Petaluma: | |
Not too far South of Windsor is Petaluma. This is also a nice, older town that looks like it's
booming right along. Unfortunately, the day we were there, I think they were having a
"My Fertilizer Stinks More Than Your Fertilizer" contest. We walked around anyway, though, because who knows when we'd get back again.
I did like all the old homes and businesses. It's nice to see the old-style construction once
in a while to remind me that we didn't always build houses with a cookie-cutter. |
Fort Ross: | |
Fort Ross is just up the coast from Bodega Bay (Bodega Bay is where the movie "The Birds" was made).
Fort Ross was built buy the Russians back when they were one of the original claimmakers of California. The construction of the fort was different than anything I've ever seen before. Kind of a
"Lincoln-Log meets Large Redwoods" type-thingy. Very solid-looking construction technique whatever it is. The trip up the coast to Fort Ross was beautiful too. Afterwards, we headed inald on Fort Ross
road which turned out to be a fun twisty road through the Redwoods and eventually lead to a park in
the woods where we had a picnic and a hike. |
Point Reyes National Park/
Point Reyes is on the coast, just North of San Francisco.
We spent the day in the area when we were heading down to see my brother Bill and his wife Joanne.
It's a great area to see what effect an earthquake can truly have. Califonia might not slip into the ocean,
but this part of California might someday. Between the scenery and the twisty coastline roads, there was not much left out to add to the fun factor.
I'd like to go back to this area with a motorcycle someday. |
Train Trip Through Wine Country:
Our good friends Randy and Debbie invited us to share a train ride and dinner with them through the Wineries.
It was very relaxing. Dinner was great and the company was most excellent. Randy and Debbie used the opportunity to ride their motorcycle up for a few days. They visited with one of her sons in Berkley too.
We were in our car this trip - anticipating bringing home a few barrels of wine that wouldn't fit on a bike. |
