Colorado River With Kayaks & Canoe
September, 2008 - A New One For Me

Day One - Saturday:

Nothing like Deliverance. In fact, I don't think anybody on this trip would ever "squeel lika a pig". I got an invite from Trisha, a friend of Pam's, to join them for this trip. Most of them have done it a few times before, but I was definitely green. Didn't matter as they all took great care of me (JoBeth and Rich - thanks again for the coffee). Oh yeah, for this trip, I'm officially Richard, he's Rich. It worked.

The trip actually started with us arriving at Walter's Camp late Friday evening, just before sunset. After setting up camp, it was pretty much time for bed. Too bad because the stars were putting on quite a show. Saturday morning, we filled up with fresh ice and took off for the wild blue (actually murkish green) yonder.

Saturday was a relaxing stroll down the Colorado River with a few stops on the sand bars to cool off. We got to our destination at 4-S campground in the early afternoon. It was much better setting up with daylight. After dinner, we sat around the fire and again enjoyed a beautiful display of stars.

Day Two - Sunday:

Sunday we ate breakfast, broke camp, and headed to our final destination at Martinez Lake. I was really tired due to a lack of sleep (really warm Friday night, really cold Saturday night). So I used that as an excuse to drop the motor in the water. Yeah Baby - that's the ticket! I'd paddle for a while and watch the kayaks get a ways ahead of me, then I'd hit the switch. It's the only way to fly.

Day Two - Sunday:

Eric and Holley, the designated drivers were awaiting our arrival with extreme anticipation (or else they were sleeping in their trucks and we woke 'em up). On the way home, we passed through the Yuma Proving Grounds. What a Garden Spot.

It was a long weekend, but it was absolutely beautiful and a good workout (even with my cheating). I can't wait until next year to do it again.

In Case You Wondered - I Know I Do:

Why USS Global Duck 797?
Canoe is an 18' aluminum model built by Grumman in 1972.
I wrote manuals for the Northrop Grumman Global Hawk UAV.
USS Weeden, Destroyer Escort 797 is the last ship my dad was on.
Custom decal was made by me using PhotoShop. Now you know.
