Bastogne, Belgium

Bastogne, Belgium:

Bastogne was the focal point of the German attack in December, 1944. The town has five major roads intersecting it as well as a rail line which made it a valuable asset for moving tanks and supplies.

The Battered Bastards of Bastogne were surrounded by the German army for weeks. Even so, when offered a surrender, the American General, Anthony Clement McAuliffe replied with the famous, albeit abbreviated "Nuts!"
