Citadel of Dinant: | |
The Citadel of Dinant is a military fortress perched at the top of the cliff above the town.
There are three ways to ascend to the fortress.
We arrived by highway from behind, but there's also a steep cable car ride, and a 420 step staircase carved into the rock.
At the top is the Museum of Armaments with dioramas, a collapsed shelter cave,
and a great view of the Meuse River and the city of Dinant. The current citadel was built in 1820 by the Dutch.
It replaced the ruins of the original fortification which was built in 1051 on the orders of the Prince Bishop of Liege.
It was constructed to defend the Meuse against invaders, and had been torn apart in 1703. |
