Normandy, France

Normandy, France:

Operation Overlord was the code name for the Allied invasion of German-occupied Western Europe during WWII. Commonly known as D-Day, the operation commenced on June 6, 1944 with the Normandy landings. A 12,000-plane airborne assault preceded an amphibious assault involving almost 7,000 vessels. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on June 6. More than 3 million Allied troops were in France by the end of August.

The Normandy invasion, the largest in history, began with overnight parachute and glider landings, massive air attacks, and naval bombardments. Early morning amphibious landings took place on five beaches, codenamed Juno, Gold, Omaha, Utah, and Sword covered a 50-mile wide beach-head.

During the evening, remaining elements of the parachute divisions landed. D-Day forces deployed from bases along the South coast of England, most importantly Portsmouth.

The invasion, as much as any event in history, was pivotal in stopping Hitler's conquest. Hitler's National Zocialists (National Socialists), better known as "NAZI's", the Japanese, and to a lesser degree the Italians, were responsible for the deaths of over 100 million people during WWII. And we still have to explain to the younger generation why socialism is bad.
