Fall 2008 - Four Weeks in Italy
Assisi, Umbria & Orvieto

Day 14: Assizi & Orvieto:

Day Fourteen - Assisi & Umbria:

On the way to Orvieto, we visited the hill town of Assisi and its impressive Basilica of Saint Francesco (Saint Francis).

Assisi is a beautiful hillside walled city with a vast variety of historical artifacts. Saint Francis of Assisi basically revolted against the decadent norm of the time by shedding all his worldly possesions (and his clothes) to expound the virtues of living a simple life. The order of the Fanciscan Monks is modeled after Saint Francis.

For more about Assisi and the Basilica of Saint Francesco, go to Sacred Sites - Assisi.

Another great site with lots of good photos is The City of Assisi.

Day Fourteen - Orvieto:

We next headed through the Umbrian countryside to Orvieto. The ultimate destination was the farm Agriturismo La Rocca (Agricultural Tourist Hotel of the Rock?). La Rocca, or "The Rock", is a natural rock point overlooking the wineries and the town of Orvieto.

We ended our day at the Agriturismo, where we'd stay at the farm amid olive groves and fields of grapes.

Check out the Farm at Agriturismo La Rocca.
