Day Fifteen - Orvieto: | |
In the heart of Orvieto, not unlike most cities we've seen on this trip, there's a huge church of some kind.
Whether it be a Cathedral, Basilica, Church, Baptistry, or Duomo, they all seem to have one.
Orvieto is no different with it's Duomo di Orvieto - even though it doesn't seem to actually have a dome. Hmmm??? The difference with this one, is the extremely intricate work done for the thin columns surrounding the front doors.
That and the panels of reliefs all around the building that are in almost perfect condition.
The ones surrounding the main doors serve a function that was quite common in those days.
At a time when only a privileged few knew how to read, these tell the story of Genesis. You can find more information about the Duomo at
Duomo di Orvieto Later we returned to the Agriturismo for a tasting of award-winning wines and a sampling of local Umbrian specialties. |
