Day Sixteen: Roma:

Day Sixteen - Rome:

Today we discovered ancient Rome. But first, we bid a fond farewell to Juan, our excellent driver (El Rapido). Truly a nice guy and an excellent driver - Adios Amigo & Thanks Again!

After a great pizza for lunch, we spent the rest of the day absorbing Roman culture and history. Francesca, our guide, gave us an in-depth, flash history lesson of the Coloseum, Forum and Pantheon. Evening was spent on a floodlit fountain walk through Rome's great piazzas.

Rome has an extremely long history. If you're interested in Roman history, see Timeline: Ancient Rome.

Rome has a lot going on. There's some nice photos of the monuments at Ancient Rome Monuments.

Harley Ultra Classic Electra Glide - Not Many in Europe
Spotted this one on at our lunch stop on the way to Rome.
Similar to the bike I rode cross-country a couple months ago.

Francesca Was Very Knowledgeable &
Passionate About Her Roman Heritage

The Engineering Detail is Fascinating
In fact, the only reason the coloseum is not complete is
due more to 2000 years of looters, not structural failure.

Roman Forum - Again, These Structues Didn't Just "Fall Apart"
Many Churches, farms, homes, and other structures were
constructed using material "borrowed" from the past.

The older, original temple dated from

There are holes and divots all over the
arch thought to be for flying banners.

Let's Try This Way

Tabularium - Symbol of the Roman Senates' Return to Power
Built in 78 BC, it was designed to house the State Archives
and was therefore a public building of some importance.
